Growing Up

Millie grew up in Philadelphia in a strict household with her parents, two brothers, and two sisters. Her father was a functioning alcoholic, though she didn't recognize it at the time. She believed her family was normal—they had a piano, went on family drives, and enjoyed vacations. Despite this, Millie often felt different and struggled with self-esteem, even as she grew into adulthood.

First Time Engaging in Behavioral Addiction

Millie’s first experience with alcohol occurred at an under-21 club. She drank heavily to fit in, leading to her first blackout. Though she didn’t like the taste of alcohol, the need to be accepted drove her to continue drinking. Eventually, she began experimenting with cocaine and fell into a pattern of using substances as an escape.

Active Addiction

Millie’s addiction spiraled as she balanced a high-pressure corporate career, motherhood, and substance use. She transitioned from drinking and snorting cocaine to freebasing, often hiding her addiction behind a facade of success. Her relationships suffered, including her marriage, which ended due to infidelity and domestic violence. Addiction also led her to reckless behaviors, such as selling drugs and using her home for drug activities, all while her young daughter bore witness to the chaos.

Hitting Bottom

Her lowest point came after a series of traumatic events, including her brother’s suicide and losing control over her life. She found herself unable to work, selling household items to fund her addiction, and feeling consumed by shame and hopelessness. In desperation, she prayed for just one day of sobriety, marking a pivotal moment in her journey.

Getting Help

After hitting rock bottom, Millie sought help through treatment programs and a support network. Initially resistant, she began to embrace recovery, finding solace and strength in addiction support groups. With perseverance, she achieved sobriety and began rebuilding her life, focusing on personal growth, faith, and service to others.
