Show Notes

Michael Herbert, an experienced therapist and coach celebrating 35 years of sobriety. From a challenging upbringing in a strict household to losing everything during his battle with addiction, Michael’s story is one of resilience and transformation.

A Difficult Start: Michael's Childhood and Early Struggles

Michael’s early years were marked by challenges in a strict, religious household. Growing up without a father, he often felt disconnected and out of place, especially in a home where rules were strict, and affection was scarce. School was another source of struggle due to undiagnosed ADHD, making it difficult for him to fit in and excel.

The First Encounter: Experimenting with Substances

Michael’s first encounter with substances was a turning point. As a teenager, he started with cigarettes and marijuana, finding a temporary escape from his internal chaos. It wasn’t long before he joined the Navy, where heavy drinking and cocaine use became his new normal. Substance use felt like an escape but quickly became a trap.

A Life in Chaos: Active Addiction and Its Consequences

During active addiction, Michael’s life spiraled out of control. Freebasing cocaine turned into a destructive crack addiction that left him homeless, jobless, and alone. He recalls his lowest moment: lying on the floor with nothing but a pillow and a jar of jalapenos, wondering how his life had unraveled so completely.

Hitting Rock Bottom: The Moment That Changed Everything

Rock bottom was a wake-up call. Multiple failed rehab attempts left Michael feeling hopeless, but a final push from the VA introduced him to a 12-step program that resonated. For the first time, he understood that recovery was about more than just stopping drug use; it was about rebuilding his entire life.

The Road to Recovery: Rebuilding from the Ground Up

Michael’s path to recovery involved rebuilding from the ground up. He dove into therapy, began working in addiction treatment, and took on personal challenges like running 250 kilometers through the Sahara Desert to raise awareness and funds for recovery initiatives. Each step was a testament to his commitment to not only his own recovery but also to helping others find theirs.

Life After Addiction: A Story of Hope and Resilience

Today, Michael’s life is a testament to the power of transformation. As a therapist and coach, he continues to inspire others with his story. His work with African Hopeful Horizons and his commitment to personal growth show that recovery is an ongoing journey. Michael’s message is clear: no matter how low you’ve sunk, there’s always a way back up, and the journey is worth it.
