Show Notes

In this episode, we sit down with an executive who lived life on the edge, fueled by a relentless drive to succeed and a deep struggle with alcohol and substance abuse. He’s now nine and a half years sober and shares his journey from high-flying success to utter despair and back.

Growing Up

The guest shares how his childhood set the stage for his addiction. Growing up in an environment where the bar was low and boundaries were blurred, he experimented with drinking and drugs early on, seeing it as an escape from life’s disappointments. He vividly recalls moments of loneliness, missed connections, and attempts to fit into a world that often felt alien.

First Time Using

His first encounter with alcohol was at age 12, a drink that felt like the answer to everything missing. From that point, he was hooked on the feeling of escape. He began experimenting with drugs, adding layers of secrecy and shame, but always returning to alcohol as his primary vice.

Active Addiction

As he moved through high school and into a thriving career in finance, his addiction grew. He masked his dependency behind success, money, and the high-powered lifestyle of private equity. His behavior became increasingly erratic, leading to missed work, blown opportunities, and strained relationships. The consequences were severe, but his financial success allowed him to keep buying his way out of trouble.

Hitting Bottom

Rock bottom came slowly and painfully. It was a Fourth of July party, an argument, and the realization that he was alone in a crowd, burning every bridge left standing. Soon after, he found himself in a seaside town, broken and desperate. He knew he had to change or face the ultimate consequence: death.

Getting Help
The road to recovery was anything but smooth. He resisted treatment, fought authority, and nearly walked out of rehab multiple times. But each time, someone pulled him back. Whether it was a tough-love therapist or a friend’s simple but powerful call to stop running, these moments became the stepping stones to a new life.

Life Today

Now, nine and a half years sober, his life is a testament to the power of resilience and change. He’s found joy in the simple things, like a good cup of coffee and genuine connections. He mentors others, sharing his story of experience, strength, and hope to inspire those who feel trapped in their own cycles of addiction. His journey is proof that no matter how far you’ve fallen, you can rise again.
