She had a master’s degree in criminology and yet, she ended up addicted to heroin, walking the streets of Kensington, Philadelphia, caught in a world of drugs, prostitution, and grooming. In this raw and eye-opening episode of Crosstalk Podcasts, we sit down with a courageous woman who shares the brutal truth of how addiction hijacked her life and the incredible turning point that brought her back.

Her Descent into Addiction

What started as casual use quickly spiraled into dependency on heroin and crack cocaine. Desperate and disconnected from her family, she found herself navigating the harsh streets of Kensington, doing whatever it took to get high, including prostituting herself.

But it didn’t stop there. A man who initially offered her food and care slowly pulled her into a sex trafficking operation. Without realizing it, she had become “property” in an organized prostitution ring. The illusion of choice was stripped away, replaced by control, violence, and manipulation.

The Turning Point

Ironically, it was her criminal record, built from numerous arrests for possession and solicitation, that became her way out. A police officer who was also part of a federal task force recognized the signs and intervened. She was arrested, jailed, and ultimately court-ordered into long-term treatment.

While she didn’t seek sobriety at first, time in jail helped her detox and reflect. She was eventually transferred to Karen Treatment Center and later Renaissance in Florida, where, for the first time, she began to believe she could live a different life.

Life Today: From Victim to Victor

After nine months in treatment and a lot of emotional healing, she built a new life in recovery. She became a sponsor, found strength in 12-step programs, and now works as a counselor assistant at the very place that helped save her. Today, she dedicates her life to helping other women escape the same darkness she once lived through.

This episode isn’t just about addiction. It’s about survival, transformation, and the courage to face unimaginable trauma head-on. Whether you’re in recovery, know someone who is, or want to better understand the hidden realities of addiction and trafficking, her story will move you, educate you, and inspire you.
