Show Notes

Corey and his good friend, Andrew, journey through how Andrew began getting high, how he stopped, and how great life has become free from his torturous addiction.

Early Struggles and Realizations

Andrew's story begins with his early life struggles. Adopted into a Jewish household in the Bronx, he recalls feeling out of place from a very young age. This sense of not belonging, coupled with emotional insecurities, led him down a path of deflection and acting out. Diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed medication, Andrew quickly turned to substance abuse, finding solace in drugs and alcohol.

The Descent into Addiction

By the time Andrew was in middle school, his substance use had escalated. He manipulated doctors for stronger prescriptions and discovered the euphoria of combining drugs with alcohol. His teenage years were marked by constant partying, drug use, and a search for identity as the life of the party. Despite these behaviors, he managed to maintain appearances, even securing a job in finance on Wall Street.

A Wake-Up Call and the Turning Point

Andrew's turning point came after a series of life-threatening incidents and the tragic deaths of close friends due to overdoses. The realization that he could be next hit him hard. An emotional breakdown in New Orleans marked his rock bottom. Returning home, his family urged him to seek help, and he finally admitted himself to rehab.

The Road to Recovery

Andrew's journey through rehab was tumultuous. Initially resistant, he faced the reality of his addiction and the need for change. A pivotal moment occurred when his drug dealer urged him to stay in treatment. This unexpected advice, coupled with the support of a recovery community, helped him begin to embrace sobriety. A fellow patient’s words, "When will you have 30 days to work on yourself again?" resonated deeply, prompting Andrew to commit to the process.

Building a New Life in Sobriety

Post-rehab, Andrew found himself grappling with anxiety and the challenge of navigating life without substances. His first AA meeting proved to be a lifeline, where he reconnected with a high school friend who introduced him to a supportive network. This network became crucial in his recovery, providing daily check-ins and unwavering support.

Embracing New Passions and Connections

Andrew's sobriety journey included setting small, achievable goals to rebuild his life. From gym workouts to playing golf with friends, he gradually filled his time with positive activities. His dedication to personal growth and physical health led him to run a 5K and eventually foster a healthy, fulfilling lifestyle.

The Gift of Forgiveness

A significant aspect of Andrew's recovery was forgiving himself and others. This journey included reconnecting with his biological parents and letting go of long-held resentments. Through sobriety, he gained the strength to address past wounds and build healthier relationships.

A Message of Hope

Andrew’s story is one of transformation and hope. His journey highlights the importance of connection, vulnerability, and the power of a supportive community. For those struggling with addiction or seeking to maintain sobriety, Andrew’s experiences offer valuable insights and encouragement.
